Dried marshmallows soften quickly when added to hot beverages such as cocoa or coffee and can also be used in trail mix, cereals, or snack blends.

This recipe explains how to dry miniature marshmallows to improve texture and storage stability for backcountry use.

Step 1:

Arrange miniature marshmallows in a single layer on dehydrator trays.

Step 2:

Dry at 135°F (57°C).

Step 3:

Dry for approximately 6 hours until the marshmallows become firm and crisp. After cooling, properly dried marshmallows should shatter when squeezed between your fingers rather than compressing.

Step 4:

Allow the marshmallows to cool completely before packaging to prevent condensation during storage.

Step 5:

Store in airtight containers or vacuum-sealed jars until needed.

Optional step:

Dried marshmallows can be ground into marshmallow powder using a coffee or spice grinder. Pulse the grinder in short bursts of up to 5 seconds at a time to prevent heat buildup that may cause the powder to clump.
